24-Hour Emergency Response: What to Do During a Flood

Floods are among the most frequent and costly natural disasters. When floodwaters rise, panic is a natural reaction, but having a clear plan can save lives and property.

Immediate Actions

If a flood warning is issued, move to higher ground immediately. Do not wait for instructions to move. Follow evacuation orders precisely—ignoring them can put you and first responders at risk.

Electrical Safety

Identify your home's main electrical panel. If safely reachable (and dry), turn off all power. Never touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.

Water Valves

Shut off the main water valve to prevent contamination of your plumbing system. If you have gas appliances, turn off the gas at the main valve as well to prevent fires or explosions.

Evacuation Kit

Have a "go-bag" ready with essential documents (insurance, ID), medications, basic first aid, flashlights, batteries, and non-perishable food. Don't forget needs for pets and infants.
