Preventing Mold Growth After Water Damage: Expert Tips
Mould is a stealthy invader that can begin growing within 24-48 hours of water exposure. Once it takes hold, it can cause significant property damage and serious health issues for your family. Prevention is always better (and cheaper) than remediation.
The 24-48 Hour Window
Time is your enemy when it comes to mould. You have a critical window of about 24 to 48 hours to dry out wet materials before mould spores begin to colonize. This is why immediate water extraction and drying are non-negotiable.
Control Humidity Levels
Mould thrives in humid environments. Ideally, you want to keep indoor humidity below 60%. Use dehumidifiers and air conditioners to pull moisture from the air. In a water damage situation, industrial-grade dehumidifiers are often necessary to lower humidity levels quickly enough.
Remove Wet Materials
Porous materials like carpet padding, drywall, and insulation that have been soaked are often impossible to dry completely before mould sets in. In many cases, these materials must be removed and discarded to save the structural elements behind them.
Air Circulation is Key
Stagnant air pockets allow moisture to linger. Use fans to circulate air, but be careful: if mould has already started growing, high-velocity fans can spread spores to unaffected areas. Always inspect for visible mould before setting up aggressive air movement.
