Seasonal Home Maintenance to Prevent Water Damage
Water damage isn't always a sudden catastrophe. Often, it's the result of small, unnoticed issues that accumulate over time. A proactive seasonal maintenance routine is your home's best defense.
Gutters and Downspouts
Clogged gutters are a leading cause of roof leaks and foundation damage. Clean them at least twice a year (spring and autumn). Ensure downspouts extend at least 2 meters away from your foundation to direct water away safely.
Roof Inspection
Inspect your roof for missing, damaged, or curling shingles. distinct patches of moss or algae can signal trapped moisture. Check flashing around chimneys and vents—these are common leak points.
Plumbing Checks
Check under sinks and around appliances (dishwasher, washing machine, fridge) for signs of leaks or moisture. Hoses can crack and degrade over time; replace them every 3-5 years even if they look okay.
Sump Pump Testing
If you have a basement with a sump pump, test it before the rainy season begins. Pour a bucket of water into the pit to ensure the pump activates and drains correctly.
